Parker 51 solid gold presidential fountain pen from UK
This is most prestigious pens
ever produced by Parker in the UK, they had a policy of producing a
'Presidential' version of all their top line pens and they were usually
available in either 9 or 18ct gold. The American equivalents were made from
14ct gold so it is easy to tell the origin from the gold content.
The Parker "51",
solid gold offering is called the "Presidential", while a.1/10 14k gold
filled version called the "Signet" (later known as
"Insignia"). In terms of gold content in the different versions, use
the 1/10 as your guide. I believe the Presidential had a smooth gold cap &
barrel finish, whereas the Signet had a vertical line design on the cap/barrel.
The UK versions were 18k and 9k Presidentials and a 9k rolled gold (i.e., gold
filled) version.
Signets are not very common,
but certainly far more common than Presidentials. The gold cap and barrel
(whether solid or gold filled) was only offered in the Aerometric series as a
regular production offering, not in the earlier Vacumatic line
